The circuit
Built in 1951 around the shores of Lake Pergusa, inside the special nature reserve, it is a fast 4,950 metre circuit that has hosted non-championship Formula 1 races (Mediterranean Grand Prix), Formula 2 and 3000, the World Sportscar Championship and a World Superbike round in 1989. Closed to competition in 2004 after losing its FIA licence, it reopened in 2011 with an FIA Grade 3 licence; it is run by a consortium of public bodies and has 25 garages, a 20,000 m² paddock, grandstands seating 5,000 and a hospitality area.
